GOOD MUSIC

Before I say too much in this post I’ll first acknowledge that “good” is a relative term and so “good music taste” is almost impossible to define. No one can really claim to be an authority on “good music” except maybe music producers—and to a lesser extent, trained musicians and DJ’s. Record executives and A&R reps would claim to have an ear for talent as well but, since I’m none of the above, I definitely won’t. I will however go as far as saying that anyone with authority on the subject would tell you that truly impressive new artists, producers and music releases are scarce—and I would agree.

Since this blog’s inception, I’ve probably actually only posted 10 to 15 new songs (2007-2008 releases) that have had replay value on my iPod. Even less became hits within my immediate social circle. Websites like the “New Music Cartel’s” (NahRight, 2dopeboyz, etc.) publish anywhere between 5 and 25 hiphop-related blog posts per day. The most we’ve ever posted was maybe 5 in a day, averaging about 1 per day. Doing some rough math, if I did 300 posts that were “new music” in a year and a half, and only truly liked 15 of the songs, shouldn’t I have done a lot less posting? 300 posts, 15 that ended up being worthwhile, and only one musical genre covered? This may all be an over-simplification but it might also be food for thought.

Beyond the topic of blogging, what matters a lot more to me than newly released music (or predictions for the future of music), is discovering good music I’ve never heard before. Not having a constant supply would be like eating the same thing every day. That is not a fate I could easily endure. I suppose it would be cool if someone had the same music taste as me and gave me a new mixtape every month, but that’s not going to happen. And so, my search must always continue.

Regardless of any matters of opinion, there’s a few things that have become clear to me over the past year or two. I now see that “fresh” new music doesn’t matter to me as much as the need for good music in general. It’s also obvious that there are people out there doing an amazing job of providing blog readers with all the latest in new music, and that isn’t my burden. Lastly, I’ve realized that if I have to choose between having a day where the LAF has a.) one “okay” song and two sub-par ones or b.) no posts at all, I would choose the second option. With that said I apologize for any songs that slipped through the cracks and ended up on here, and assure you that it will happen far less often from now on. And for those days when there’s no music to put anyone up on—don’t worry—I’m sure something else that’s worth your time will pop up. ‘Best New Music of 2008′ post coming soon. Big things poppin’, little problems, solving. I’m looking forward to 2009.

CUNNIN LYNGUISTS: DANCE FOR ME

Honestly not the best song in the world (I just noticed I say this about a lot of my SOTD choices..weird) but the verses are really good. Listening to it would not be a complete waste of your time if you haven’t heard it.. trust me. Also, for some reason I just really like posts composed of songs and photos that perfectly match each other.

CROOKED I “THE BLOCK OBAMA”

Here’s the last track to leak from The Block Obama Mixtape before it drops. Crooked I is possibly one of the most lyrical mainstream(ish) mc’s the westcoast has ever produced. Sometimes his…over-lyricism (sure why not) gets old but a lot of the time it’s catchy as hell. Since this is the first time I’ve ever featured him on LAF and it’s mostly his crew, plus this isn’t his best work ever, I’ve included another track as well…

I might do a post with some of his older stuff some time…
